What is Tech UGC? Meaning, format and examples
Tech UGC: Tech UGC is user-generated-style short video that promotes apps, SaaS or other software, usually built from a reaction shot, a screen-recorded demo and an on-screen hook.
Tech UGC is short-form video made by creators to promote apps, SaaS tools and other software. Instead of holding up a physical product, you show the product on a screen. Most tech UGC follows one formula: a quick reaction, an app demo, and a hook on screen the whole time.
How it works
A typical tech UGC video has three parts:
- Reaction shot. About three seconds of you reacting to camera: surprised, curious, relieved.
- App demo. A screen recording of the app doing the thing it promises.
- Hook text. One line on screen from start to finish, such as “POV: your camera roll posts itself.”
The app changes from client to client. The formula does not. That is why the same reaction clips and demo recordings can be reused across many posts.
Tech UGC is often posted on brand-owned accounts, which is the Canvas UGC model. It can also be delivered as raw files for the brand’s own ads.
Example
A photo-cleanup app hires you. You film yourself looking shocked at your phone, record the app clearing 2,000 duplicate photos, and add the hook “I deleted 2,000 photos in one tap.” Tomorrow you post the same demo with a new reaction and a new hook.
How you get paid
Tech UGC deals use the same models as other UGC: CPM, per-video rates and monthly retainers. Many app brands pay on views because app installs follow views.
Why it matters for UGC creators
- You don’t need to be on camera much. The demo carries most of the video. Some creators go fully faceless.
- Assets are reusable. A folder of reaction clips and a few demo recordings can feed many posts.
- Hooks decide views. Since the format is fixed, the hook is the main thing you test.
