What is Canvas UGC? Meaning and how it works

Canvas UGC: Canvas UGC is short-form video a creator makes and posts on an account the brand owns, paid on output or views instead of the creator's own following.

Canvas UGC is short-form video you make and post on a social account the brand owns, not on your own profile. The account is the “canvas”: it often starts with zero followers, and you fill it with videos. You get paid for output and views, so your own follower count does not matter. The term is credited to creator Mackenzie Marsh on TikTok (Billo).

How it works

  1. The brand creates a new account (or hands you one). Some deals ask you to create it yourself.
  2. You script, film, edit and post videos on it, often one to three a day.
  3. You get paid on a CPM, a flat per-video rate, a monthly retainer, or a mix.
  4. The brand keeps the account, the audience and every video when the deal ends.

Canvas CPMs commonly sit around $2–4 per 1,000 views, within published ranges of $1–5 to $2–8. Rates vary a lot by brand and niche.

Example

A budgeting app hires you to run a fresh TikTok account. Each post is a three-second reaction shot, a screen recording of the app, and a hook on screen: “I didn’t know where my paycheck went until this.” You post twice a day. You are paid per 1,000 views across all posts that month.

How it differs from traditional UGC

In traditional UGC you deliver video files and the brand posts or runs them as ads. In Canvas UGC you also run the account. That means daily posting, testing hooks and watching what gets views. For a full comparison, see Canvas UGC vs traditional UGC.

Why it matters for UGC creators

  • No audience needed. You can start with zero followers of your own.
  • Views are pay. On a CPM deal, more posts and better hooks mean more chances at a viral video.
  • The work repeats. Filming, editing and posting every day is where the hours go. That is what caps how many accounts you can run.
  • Disclosure still applies. Posts on a brand account that look like a personal account raise disclosure questions. Read the FTC guidance for influencers and ask the brand how they handle it.
