What is a hook in UGC? Meaning and examples
Hook: A hook is the first line, shot or on-screen text of a short video, built to stop viewers from scrolling past in the first seconds.
A hook is the opening of a short video that makes people stop scrolling. In UGC it is usually one line of text on screen, often backed by a reaction shot or a spoken line. If the hook fails, the rest of the video doesn’t get watched.
How it works
A hook has one job: give the viewer a reason to watch the next few seconds. In UGC, hooks usually do one of these:
- Promise a result. “I deleted 2,000 photos in one tap.”
- Signal a secret. “This marketing hack feels almost illegal.”
- Set up a story. “I’ve been traveling for 3 years and I just found this.”
- Put the viewer in the scene. “POV: your camera roll posts itself.”
In tech UGC, the hook usually stays on screen for the whole video, over a reaction shot and the app demo.
Example
Take the same app demo and two hooks:
- “This app is really useful for organizing.”
- “I didn’t know where my paycheck went until this.”
The first describes the app. The second gives a reason to keep watching. Same footage, different hook, very different watch time.
Testing hooks
Since the format is fixed, the hook is the main thing you can change. Creators test hooks by posting the same demo with different opening lines on different days, then keeping what gets views. Brands do the same with paid ads, often through dark posts.
A few rules that help:
- Keep it short enough to read in about two seconds.
- Match the hook to what the demo shows. A hook the video doesn’t pay off loses viewers.
- Write many. You won’t know which one works until it is posted.
Why it matters for UGC creators
On a CPM deal, views are pay, and the hook decides most of the views. Testing more hooks gives you more data on what your audience stops for. Without a face on camera, as in faceless UGC, the hook carries even more weight.
