What are UGC ads? Meaning, formats, examples
UGC ads: UGC ads are paid social ads made from user-generated-style videos, where a creator shows or talks about a product in a natural, phone-shot style instead of a studio production.
UGC ads are paid ads made from creator-style videos. Instead of a studio shoot, the ad looks like a normal post: a person on a phone, showing or talking about the product. The goal is an ad that looks like it belongs in the feed.
How it works
A brand hires creators to make videos, then runs them as paid social ads. Three common setups:
- From the brand’s account. The brand runs your video as a standard ad, often as a dark post.
- From your account. The brand runs your post as an ad under your handle: a Spark Ad on TikTok or a partnership ad on Instagram and Facebook. That’s whitelisting.
- Recut from raw files. The brand’s editors cut new versions from your raw footage and B-roll.
Common formats include a talking-head testimonial, an unboxing, problem then solution, a reaction plus app demo, and “3 reasons I switched” lists.
Example
A brand buys one video from you with three different hooks. It runs all three as ads to the same audience, compares cost per install after a few days, and puts the budget behind the winner. The body of the video is the same. Only the opening seconds change. That’s why brands ask for hook variations as deliverables.
How to study UGC ads
You can see what’s running. Meta’s Ad Library contains all active ads shown across Meta’s apps, and anyone can search it (Meta). TikTok’s Creative Center has a Top Ads dashboard you can filter by region and industry, with a second-by-second performance graph for each ad (TikTok). Watch the first two seconds of the ads in your client’s niche and note what they open with.
Why it matters for UGC creators
- Ad usage is worth more than an organic post. Price paid usage separately and give it an end date. See usage rights.
- The hook carries the ad. Brands drop versions that lose viewers early. Know how your openings perform. See hook rate.
- Your face may run for months. Agree on platforms, duration and whose handle the ad runs from before you deliver.
- Variations are a product. Three hooks on one video is more value for the brand, so quote it as more work.
