What is an app demo in UGC? Meaning and tips
App demo: An app demo is a short screen recording of an app in use, shown in a UGC video to prove the app does what the hook says.
An app demo is a screen recording of an app doing the thing your video promises. In tech UGC it usually follows a short reaction clip and runs under the hook text. The hook makes the claim. The demo proves it.
How it works
You record your phone screen while you use the app. Both major phone systems have this built in:
- iPhone. Add Screen Recording to Control Center, tap Record and wait for the three-second countdown (Apple).
- Android. Swipe down twice, tap Screen record in Quick Settings, and choose whether to show your touches on screen (Android Help).
Apple notes that some apps might not allow you to record. Check before you plan a shoot around one.
A good demo shows one result. Open the app, do the one action the hook talks about, and land on the result. Cut the loading screens, the menus and the sign-up flow.
Example
A photo-cleanup app’s hook reads “I deleted 2,000 photos in one tap.” The demo opens on a cluttered camera roll, shows the tap on the cleanup button, and ends on the emptied library. A few seconds of footage, no narration needed.
Tips for recording demos
- Turn on Do Not Disturb so no notification lands in the shot.
- Use a demo account. Fill it with realistic sample data, not your own messages or bank balance.
- Record one demo per feature. A handful of demos can cover many posts when each is paired with a different reaction and hook.
- Re-record after redesigns. If the app’s screens change, an old demo no longer matches what viewers download.
Why it matters for UGC creators
- The demo is the proof. A hook the video doesn’t pay off loses viewers.
- It’s the reusable part. The app stays the same from post to post, so one demo can run under many hooks. Change the reaction and the hook each time so posts aren’t copies. See content repurposing.
- Brands may supply them. Some clients send their own screen recordings. Ask in the creative brief.
If you already have a folder of demos, UGCPoster pairs one with a reaction clip on each run, writes a fresh hook, renders the video and posts it.
