What is a reaction clip in UGC? Meaning and tips
Reaction clip: A reaction clip is a short shot, often about three seconds, of a creator reacting to camera with surprise, curiosity or relief, used to open a UGC video.
A reaction clip is a short shot of you reacting to camera, usually at the start of a UGC video. You look shocked, curious, relieved or amused, and the hook text sits on top. It puts a human face in the first second before the app demo takes over.
How it works
In tech UGC, a video is often three parts: a reaction clip of about three seconds, an app demo, and one hook line on screen throughout. The reaction does two jobs. It stops the scroll with a face and an emotion, and it sets up the claim the demo will prove.
Most reaction clips have no dialogue and don’t show the product. That means one clip can fit many hooks and many demos, which is why creators film them in batches.
Example
You film 20 reactions in one session: wide eyes at your phone, a slow head shake, a hand over your mouth, a laugh, a “wait, what?” look. Over the next month, each one opens several videos for a budgeting app, every time with a different demo and hook, such as “I didn’t know where my paycheck went until this.”
How to film good reaction clips
- Match emotions to your hooks. Surprise fits discovery hooks. Relief fits problem-solved hooks. Film a range.
- Leave room for text. Keep your face clear of where the hook and captions will sit.
- Change something between takes. Outfit, room, light, angle. Twenty clips that look identical read as one clip.
- Keep them short. Two to four seconds is enough. The demo carries the rest.
- Shoot on your phone. UGC is meant to look like a person filmed it, not a studio.
Why it matters for UGC creators
- Film once, use for weeks. A library of reactions removes the daily reshoot.
- Variety protects reach. TikTok lists “reused or unoriginal content posted without creative edits” as ineligible for the For You feed (TikTok). Pair each reaction with a different demo and hook so no two posts are copies.
- A face builds trust. If you’d rather stay off camera, see faceless UGC.
With UGCPoster, you upload your reaction clips once as a folder. Each run pairs one with a demo, least-used first, and writes a fresh hook on top.
