What are UGC usage rights? Meaning and pricing
Usage rights: Usage rights are the permissions a creator grants a brand to use their videos, defining where the content can appear, whether it can run as paid ads, and for how long.
Usage rights are the permissions you give a brand to use your videos. They say where the videos can appear, whether they can run as paid ads, and for how long. Without them in writing, it’s unclear what the brand bought: a video for one post, or an ad it can run for years.
How it works
A usage clause usually covers:
- Placement. Organic posts only, or paid ads too. Which platforms: TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, website, email.
- Duration. A fixed term such as 3, 6 or 12 months, or perpetual.
- Start date. When the term begins, often on delivery or first post.
- Exclusivity. Whether you can work with competing brands during the term.
- Edits. Whether the brand can cut, re-caption or combine your video with other footage.
Paid usage and longer terms are priced as an extra on top of your base rate. Ad usage is where to ask for a serious amount: a brand running your video as an ad can spend thousands or tens of thousands on that placement, and your video is what makes the ad work. Price it like that, not like a small add-on.
Example
You quote $150 for a video. The brand also wants to run it as a paid ad on TikTok and Meta for 6 months. You add a paid-usage fee for that term. If they want to extend, they pay again. If they want perpetual rights, that’s a larger fee. The numbers here are an example, not a market rate.
Usage rights in Canvas UGC
In Canvas UGC, you post on an account the brand owns, so the videos already live on their account. Usage can still matter: can they download your videos and run them as ads, or repost them on other accounts? Ask before you sign.
Why it matters for UGC creators
- Paid ads are worth more than organic posts. An ad can run to large audiences for months. Price it accordingly.
- Ads may run out of sight. Dark posts and whitelisted ads don’t show on any public feed. A clear term and placement list is how you keep track.
- Vague rights default to the brand. If the contract only says “usage rights included”, agree on placement and duration in writing.
Quote usage rights next to your per-video rate, not inside it, so the brand sees what each part costs. This is general information, not legal advice.
Related terms
- Whitelisting: Whitelisting (or allowlisting) is when a creator gives a brand permission to run paid ads through the creator's own account, so the ad shows the creator's name and handle.
- Dark posting: Dark posting is running a post as a paid ad that is shown only to a targeted audience and never appears on the account's public profile or feed.
- Per-video rate: A per-video rate is a flat fee a brand pays a creator for each delivered and accepted UGC video, regardless of how many views it later gets.
