What is a TikTok shadowban? Meaning and signs

Shadowban: A shadowban is the informal name for when an account's posts quietly stop being recommended to new viewers, while the account itself still works and can still post.

A shadowban is the informal name creators use when an account’s posts quietly stop reaching new viewers. The account isn’t banned. You can still post, but views drop close to zero because your videos stop showing up in recommended feeds. TikTok doesn’t officially use the word.

What TikTok actually says

TikTok’s rules talk about content being ineligible for the For You feed. Videos can be left out of the For You page for many reasons, including reused or unoriginal content posted without creative edits (TikTok Community Guidelines). If a creator repeatedly posts content like that, TikTok can make the whole account temporarily ineligible for the feed and harder to find in search. TikTok says it notifies creators when this happens and lets them appeal (TikTok).

Instagram works the same way under a different name: content that can’t be recommended still reaches your followers, just not people who don’t follow you (Instagram).

How to check

  • TikTok Account Check reviews your account status and your last 30 posts, including whether any were restricted from the For You feed (TikTok).
  • Instagram Account Status shows whether your content can be recommended, and lets you ask for a review (Instagram).

Low views on one video don’t prove anything. TikTok notes that a video without many views “doesn’t necessarily mean it broke a rule” (TikTok Community Guidelines). A shadowban looks different: every post stalls, even ones that would normally do fine.

New accounts

New accounts sometimes get stuck this way from the start, and many creators find it hard to fix. That hits UGC creators harder than most, since Canvas UGC runs on fresh brand-owned accounts. Don’t open a second account to get around it: TikTok’s rules list using another account to avoid For You feed restrictions as a violation (TikTok Community Guidelines).

Why it matters for UGC creators

  • Views are pay. On a CPM deal, a restricted account earns close to nothing.
  • Check before you guess. Run Account Check before changing your whole approach.
  • Post original edits. Vary hooks, demos and cuts instead of reposting the same video.
  • Tell the brand early. Agree what happens if an account is restricted: appeal, adjust, or pause.
