What is organic content in UGC? Organic vs paid

Organic content: Organic content is social media posts that reach viewers without paid promotion, through followers, recommendation feeds, search and shares.

Organic content is any post that reaches people without ad spend behind it. People see it because the platform recommends it, they follow the account, or someone shares or searches for it. When a brand pays to push a post to more people, that’s paid social instead.

How it works

Short-video apps recommend posts to people who don’t follow the account, through feeds like TikTok’s For You page. TikTok has said that neither follower count nor past high-performing videos are direct factors in its recommendation system (TikTok, 2020). That’s why a brand-new account can still get views.

Each platform also decides which posts it will recommend at all. On TikTok, commercial posts that aren’t properly disclosed may not be eligible for the For You feed. Labeling a post as a Paid partnership, TikTok says, doesn’t change how it’s recommended (TikTok).

Example

You post a video for a budgeting app on the brand’s new TikTok account. No ad money is spent. It reaches 40,000 people through the For You feed. That’s organic reach. If the brand later spends money to run the same video as a Spark Ad, the extra views are paid. Example numbers, not a benchmark.

Organic vs paid in a UGC deal

  • Canvas UGC is organic by design. You post on a brand-owned account, and views come from recommendations.
  • Traditional UGC is often made for paid use. The brand runs your video as an ad.
  • Many deals mix both. A video starts organic and gets ad spend once it performs.

Contracts should say which applies, because paid use is usually priced higher. See usage rights.

Why it matters for UGC creators

  • On CPM deals, organic views are your pay. Ask whether paid views count toward your CPM.
  • Organic is a test bed. Brands watch which posts perform, then put ad spend behind the winners.
  • Disclosure still applies. No ad spend doesn’t mean no paid relationship. See FTC disclosure.
  • Originality rules apply. Recommendation feeds skip reposts that add nothing new. See content repurposing.
