What is clipping? Meaning and how clippers get paid
Clipping: Clipping is cutting short vertical videos from someone else's long-form videos, such as podcasts or streams, and posting them on your own accounts, usually paid per view.
Clipping is cutting short videos out of someone else’s long-form videos and posting them for views. The source is usually a podcast, livestream or webinar. The clipper finds the best moments, crops them to vertical, adds captions, and posts them on their own TikTok, Shorts or Reels accounts. Pay is usually per view.
How it works
- A brand or creator runs a clipping campaign and shares the source footage.
- You pick moments that make sense on their own.
- You edit: vertical crop, captions, a hook in the first seconds.
- You post on your own accounts and submit the links.
- Approved clips earn a set rate per 1,000 views.
Whop’s Content Rewards runs campaigns like this. Whop describes clipping as creators turning long-form content “(podcasts, livestreams, webinars) into short clips for TikTok, YouTube Shorts, X, and Instagram Reels” (Whop Docs).
Example
A podcast host funds a clipping campaign. You cut a 40-second moment where a guest tells their best story, add captions and the hook “He quit his job with $400 in the bank”, and post it to TikTok and Shorts. You submit both links. If the campaign approves them, you earn on their views at the posted rate. The details are an example.
Clipping vs UGC
- Clipping reuses someone else’s footage. You’re the editor.
- UGC is footage you film yourself: reactions, demos, talking clips. See UGC creator.
Both reward volume, and both depend on the hook. Clipping is a form of content repurposing: one long video becomes many short ones.
Why it matters for UGC creators
- Edit, don’t just repost. TikTok makes reused or unoriginal content posted without creative edits ineligible for the For You feed (TikTok Community Guidelines). Captions, cuts and a new hook are what make a clip yours.
- Only clip with permission. TikTok doesn’t allow reposts of copyrighted material without permission (same source). Use footage the campaign gives you the right to post.
- The skills transfer. Fast vertical editing and hook writing are the same skills CPM UGC work runs on.
